In any given moment which feels stressful and angst ridden, a few simple steps can be taken which can instantly transform what feels exhausting and out of control to more manageable. Firstly, breathe.

 

galleryllWhen we are anxious or feeling overwhelmed by the ‘big’ emotions like anger, sadness, despair and jealousy we often unconsciously breathe faster or even hold our breath. Doing either of these things can cause physiological changes which actually make us feel more stressed and out of control of our feelings.

 

A simple activity like noticing our breath and focusing on breathing at a more regular pace can have a tremendous impact on our inner emotional state and help us feel more centered. It is only when our body is feeling calmer that we can  then begin the gentle process of connecting with our feelings and exploring what has triggered our emotional response.

 

So next time your feelings threaten to overwhelm you, firstly breathe....
